This just in: Writer Daniel Handler is known to some as Lemony Snicket. He is the author of many books, including 13 Words with Maira Kalman. He brings his accordion when he talks to Terry Gross. Regardless of what you call him, he opened his notebook for us, and sent us this image of barely legible scrawl.
PLUMB: Tell us about your notebooks.
DANIEL HANDLER: I always have a notebook with me unless I’m in water. When I finish one I type up what seems useable and put them in various files for future projects. I used to use bigger, thicker notebooks but I lost one in a taxi and it made me cry. While I was crying the hotel concierge called and said that the taxi driver had found it and dropped it off, but nonetheless I started to downsize. My favorite pages are when I get an idea during a boring movie or other cultural event in a darkened room, and my scrawl is even more blind than usual.
