The iconic art store on Canal Street has closed. Think of all of the creative ideas and artworks that have come from items bought there over the years. Kind of impossible to fathom. Here are six New York artist reflections on how the store shaped their work.

This was such a haven and source for me in NYC, as well. I always left spending about a kazillion more dollars than I was planning, on things I didn’t have on my list. The LA version has closed, also, a real loss for this side of the country. I was reading a post from the art critic Jerry Saltz, and the comments are wonderful, from many artists for whom Pearl served as an important local institution. I particularly enjoyed this one from Plumb artist Katherine Bradford:
“Elizabeth Murray came into the oil paint section. It was the 80s and I stood and watched intently as she scooped up maybe 25 small tubes of purple paint (an unusual purple, all the same) and then went to the cashier and paid. She was in her paint clothes. I think she lived nearby.”
