Take An #artbreak Today: Good for You, Good for 826

Take a #artbreak with Plumb

It’s probably no surprise that those of us here at Plumb love doing creative things. We like creativity for all the conventional reasons—to make stuff, to express ourselves, to explore our inner worlds—but also because we’ve noticed it allows us to check out of the noisy, busy, crazy hullabaloo for a little while. So we did some research, and we found out that others have done some research, too. It turns out that taking a just few moments to be creative is actually good for you, so we coined a thoroughly modern hashtag for it: #artbreak.

In addition to inspiring mind, heart, and imagination, taking an #artbreak for as little as five minutes a day provides many of the same benefits as meditation: it boosts immune system functioning, reduces anxiety and stress reaction, aids healing, and, of course, increases creative growth. Plus, it’s fun! And there’s no reason why you have to stop after five minutes if you’ve got the time, so after a few months, before you know it, you might just have finished that novel.

We love the concept of the #artbreak because we think it’s an accessible, non-intimidating way to get yourself doing something creative even if you don’t think you’re a creative person, because we know it’s easy to procrastinate (forever) when you think you need four hours to do something worthwhile, and because it’s a really fun way to calm your mind, body, and soul in an era where it’s difficult to find stillness and rejuvenation.

We also believe in it for kids, especially those who might not otherwise have access to great creative opportunities, so to spread the word on #artbreak Plumb has partnered with 826 National, the celebrated nonprofit that provides under-resourced students aged six to eighteen with inventive programs to explore their creativity and improve their writing skills. Plumb will donate $1 to 826 National for every Instagram photo, Facebook post, and Twitter tagged #artbreak, up to $2,500.
